Mbps, Ping, and Jitter: What Your Internet Speed Test Actually Measures

A speed test result showing "150 Mbps" feels like it should tell the whole story, but two connections with identical download speeds can feel completely different in practice — usually because of the numbers people tend to skip past: ping and jitter.

Download and upload speed

Measured in megabits per second (Mbps), download speed is how fast data comes to your device (loading pages, streaming video), and upload speed is how fast data leaves it (video calls, cloud backups, live streaming). Most home connections are asymmetric, with download speed significantly higher than upload — fine for typical browsing, but a bottleneck for anyone regularly uploading large files or hosting video calls.

Ping: the delay, not the speed

Ping (or latency) measures, in milliseconds, how long it takes a small signal to travel to a server and back — it has nothing to do with how much data can flow, only how quickly a round-trip request responds. This is why a connection can have excellent download speed but still feel laggy in real-time applications: high ping means every interaction has a noticeable delay before anything happens.

Jitter: the inconsistency

Jitter measures how much ping varies over time. A connection with low but wildly inconsistent ping causes stutter and dropped frames in video calls and online games even if the average latency number looks fine — consistency matters as much as the raw number for real-time use.

Why results vary between tests

Speed test results fluctuate based on network congestion, the test server's location and load, and how many devices are simultaneously using the same connection — running a test at different times of day, or against different servers, commonly produces meaningfully different numbers even on an unchanged connection.
