Tip Calculator

What the Tip Calculator does

The Tip Calculator works out the tip amount on a bill at any percentage, and splits the total evenly between however many people are sharing it, so the table math is done before the check even arrives.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting the bill, then click Calculate Tip.

Common uses

  • Splitting a restaurant bill fairly among a group of friends.
  • Working out an appropriate tip percentage for a service based on local norms.
  • Calculating a delivery or service tip on the spot from a phone.
  • Checking a total including tip before splitting payment on a shared card.
  • Comparing what the same bill would cost at a few different tip percentages.

Good to know

Tipping norms vary significantly by country and even by service type, so there's no universal "correct" percentage — the calculator handles the math for whatever percentage you decide is appropriate for your situation. When splitting between people, the tool divides the total bill plus tip evenly; if your group wants to split based on what each person individually ordered instead, you'll need to calculate each portion separately before applying the tip.

Tipping conventions vary considerably by country, by type of establishment, and even by region within the same country, so there's genuinely no single correct percentage — the calculator is deliberately flexible on that front, handling the arithmetic for whatever percentage fits the norms of wherever you happen to be.

Frequently asked questions

This calculator treats the entered bill amount as the base for tip calculation — if your bill includes tax and you want to tip only on the pre-tax amount, enter the pre-tax subtotal instead.
