Temperature Converter

What the Temperature Converter does

The Temperature Converter converts a temperature value between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin instantly, handling the different offset and scale each unit uses under the hood.

How to use it

  1. Enter the temperature value.
  2. Select which unit you're converting from.
  3. The converted values in the other two units appear automatically.

Common uses

  • Converting a weather forecast temperature between Celsius and Fahrenheit while traveling.
  • Converting an oven temperature between Celsius and Fahrenheit for an international recipe.
  • Checking a scientific or lab temperature reading given in Kelvin.
  • Helping with science homework involving temperature scale conversions.
  • Converting a body temperature reading from a thermometer that uses a different scale.

Good to know

Celsius and Fahrenheit use different zero points and different degree sizes, so the conversion isn't a simple multiplication — it involves both a scale factor and an offset, which is why 0°C converts to 32°F rather than 0°F. Kelvin uses the same degree size as Celsius but starts at absolute zero, so converting between Celsius and Kelvin is just a fixed offset of 273.15, with no scale factor involved.

Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin each serve a different practical purpose — Fahrenheit remains common for everyday weather reporting in a handful of countries including the US, Celsius is the global standard for most scientific and everyday use elsewhere, and Kelvin is the standard for scientific work because it starts at absolute zero, which makes certain physics calculations (like those involving gas laws) considerably simpler.

Frequently asked questions

Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9/5 + 32. This calculator applies the correct standard formula for all three temperature scales.
