Roman Numerals Explained: Reading and Writing Them Correctly

Roman numerals look decorative on a clock face or a movie's copyright year, but they follow a genuine mathematical system — one with a quirk that trips up most people who never learned the underlying rule.

The seven symbols

Every Roman numeral is built from just seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). Combining them in sequence, largest to smallest, simply adds their values — VI is 5+1=6, LX is 50+10=60.

The subtraction rule

The part that confuses people: when a smaller symbol appears before a larger one, it's subtracted instead of added. IV isn't 1+5=6, it's 5-1=4. This rule only applies to specific pairs (IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM) — not any smaller-before-larger combination arbitrarily.

Why this rule exists

Writing four as IIII (four I's in a row) was actually common in ancient and medieval usage — the subtractive IV notation became standardized more for compactness and to avoid four repeated symbols in a row, which the Roman system generally avoids (no symbol repeats more than three times consecutively).

Where Roman numerals persist today

  • Clock faces, particularly on formal or decorative clocks.
  • Movie and book copyright years, historically used to make the exact release year less immediately obvious to casual readers.
  • Sequel and edition numbering — Super Bowl LVIII, World War II.

Standard notation comfortably covers up to 3999 (MMMCMXCIX) — beyond that, additional conventions (like a bar over a numeral to multiply by 1000) are needed, which aren't in common use today.
